# Position Sizing for Economic Events

Around high-impact releases, position size matters more than entry. The right size lets you survive being wrong; the wrong size turns one bad print into a serious drawdown. Here's how to size for the news.

## Start From Risk, Not Lots
Decide what you're willing to lose on the trade first — typically **1–2% of your account** — then work backward to position size. Never start from "how many lots" and hope.

## The Formula
**Position size = (Account × Risk %) ÷ (Stop distance in pips × pip value)**

Example: $10,000 account, 1% risk ($100), 40-pip stop on EUR/USD (~$10/pip per lot):
$100 ÷ (40 × $10) = **0.25 lots.**

If you widen the stop to 80 pips for a volatile event, size **halves** to keep risk constant.

## Why Events Demand Smaller Size
Releases bring two extra hazards:
- **Wider spreads** at release inflate your effective entry cost.
- **Slippage** can fill your stop worse than expected.

Both mean your *real* risk is larger than the chart suggests. Sizing down absorbs that gap. A common rule: use **half** your normal size around high-impact events.

## Account for the Gap, Not Just the Stop
On the fastest releases, price can jump past your stop. Assume your worst-case loss may exceed the nominal stop, and size so that even a slipped stop stays within tolerable risk.

## Pre-Event vs At-Event
- **Holding through** a release: smallest size, widest stop, because you can't react to the spike.
- **Entering after** the dust settles: closer to normal size, since spreads have normalised and you can see the move.

## The Bottom Line
Set risk in percent, convert to size with the formula, then cut size further for volatile events to cover spreads and slippage. Position sizing is the seatbelt that lets you trade the news without a single print wrecking your account.
