# How to Use Event History to Anticipate Market Moves

Markets hate surprises — but if you've studied an event's history, there are fewer surprises and more probabilities. Here's how to use the past releases your calendar stores.

## Three Numbers, Every Release
- **Previous** — last period's figure (your baseline).
- **Forecast** — what economists expect (already priced in).
- **Actual** — the real number at release.

The market reacts to the gap between **Actual and Forecast** — the surprise — not the raw number.

## What History Tells You

### 1. How Often It Surprises
Some events land close to forecast almost every time; others routinely miss. An event that frequently surprises is one to expect volatility around.

### 2. The Typical Size of the Move
Does this release usually move the pair 20 pips or 150? Knowing the historical range lets you size stops and targets realistically instead of guessing.

### 3. Direction Bias
Does the number tend to beat or miss forecast? Persistent patterns hint at how the market may lean.

## A Worked Example
Suppose ECB inflation is due tomorrow, forecast 2.1%. You check history:
- Last six prints: only one notable miss.
- Typical reaction: 50–80 pips on EUR/USD.

Your plan: expect a contained move, set a stop ~30 pips away and a target inside the 50–80 pip historical range. You're trading a probability, not a hope.

## Watch the Revisions
The **Previous** number is sometimes quietly revised when the new figure drops. A strong Actual undercut by a big downward revision to last month tells a different story — markets notice.

## The Edge
You can't predict the exact number. But with history, you can estimate *how much* a release usually moves the market and *how often* it surprises — and that's enough to plan entries, stops, and whether to trade at all.
