# News Scalping: Trading the Spike on Data Releases

News scalping means capturing the fast, sharp move right after a high-impact release. Done with discipline it's a defined-risk play; done carelessly it's a fast way to lose. Here's the framework.

## The Idea
When an event like NFP or CPI surprises the forecast, the pair spikes within seconds and often runs for 15–30 minutes. Scalpers aim to capture a slice of that initial move — not the whole thing.

## Before the Release
- **Know the exact minute** (use an alert/countdown).
- **Know the forecast and previous** — these define the surprise.
- **Pick your instrument** — the most liquid pair for that currency (e.g., EUR/USD for USD data).
- **Pre-set your levels.** You will not have time to think after the print.

## Two Common Approaches

### 1. Trade the Breakout
Enter in the direction of the surprise immediately after the release (beat → buy the currency; miss → sell). Stop ~20–30 pips, target ~30–50 pips. You're capturing the first impulse.

### 2. Trade the Retest
Let the initial spike happen, wait 5–15 minutes for it to settle, then enter on the pullback in the direction of the move. Cleaner entry, less whipsaw, smaller but higher-probability slice.

## Risk Rules (Non-Negotiable)
- **Size down.** Spreads widen and slippage spikes at release — smaller size absorbs that.
- **Hard stop, pre-set.** No "I'll watch it." The move is too fast.
- **Accept slippage.** Your fill may be worse than expected; your stop and size must account for it.
- **One event at a time.** Don't scalp three releases at once.

## The Honest Caveat
News scalping is high-variance. Spreads widen, fills slip, and direction can reverse on the press conference. It suits traders with strict discipline and pre-set levels — not those reacting in real time. If that's not you, trading the cleaner post-event trend is often the better choice.
